Digital course materials may be provided through your school’s course materials program or purchased separately. Where you access your materials depends on how they were provided to you.
Materials Provided Through Your School
If your course materials are automatically provided through your school, you will usually access them through your school’s student portal or Learning Management System (LMS), such as Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, or Moodle.
Sign in to your school’s LMS and open your course. Look for the bookstore or course materials link associated with your class.
From there, you may be able to:
- Read an eBook through VitalSource Bookshelf
- Reveal an access code for publisher courseware
- Access materials hosted on a publisher’s website
- View the materials assigned to your course
For VitalSource eBooks, select Read Now. You may be asked to sign in to an existing VitalSource Bookshelf account or create one. Once you have accessed the material, it will also appear in your VitalSource Bookshelf library.

Materials Available Through Your Online Bookstore
Digital materials associated with your Online Bookstore account may also be available in your eLibrary.
To access your eLibrary:
- Sign in to your Online Bookstore using your student account.
- Select your username in the upper-right corner.
- Select eLibrary.
- Locate your course material and review the available access information.
Your eLibrary contains the digital course materials associated with your bookstore account along with the title, author, and access information. Access instructions may also be sent to your student email.
VitalSource Bookshelf eBooks
If your material is a VitalSource eBook, access it for the first time through your Online Bookstore eLibrary or the link provided through your school’s LMS.
Select Read Now or Access Now and sign in to your existing VitalSource Bookshelf account. If you do not already have an account, you may be prompted to create one using your school email address.

Publisher Courseware and Access Codes
Some digital materials are accessed on a publisher’s website rather than read directly in VitalSource Bookshelf.
If your course requires an access code:
- Open your course materials through your LMS or Online Bookstore eLibrary.
- Locate the appropriate course material.
- Select Reveal Access Code when available.
- Copy the displayed code.
- Follow the provided instructions to access the publisher’s website and redeem your code.
Some courses may also require a course key provided by your instructor.

If Your School Requires You to Opt In
If your school uses an opt-in/opt-out course materials program, sign in to your school’s portal and review your course materials to confirm your current selection.
If you are opted in, your eligible course materials should be available through the access method provided by your school.
If your account shows that you are opted out, the materials may not be automatically provided to you. If you intended to participate in the program, review the options available through your school’s portal for changing your selection.
If You Purchase or Rent Your Books Separately
If you purchase your materials independently rather than receiving them through a school program, the way you access the material depends on where and how it was purchased.
Your school bookstore is a good resource for available purchase options. You may also purchase eligible digital titles directly through the VitalSource student storefront.
After purchasing, follow the access instructions provided by the retailer or publisher.
